Maintaining clear and navigable access for vehicles is crucial for rural Tennessee properties, where driveways and roads can take a beating from weather and heavy use. Whether dealing with a gravel surface or an old paved road full of potholes, keeping these pathways in good condition is essential to getting around.

Sometimes, it’s necessary to take road repairs into your own hands, especially if it’s your own driveway or an old farm road. This DIY approach to driveways and road maintenance needs some serious tools for getting the job done. From box blades to backhoes and rotary cutters, let’s take a look at some attachments for your tractor that can help you keep your roads clear and easy to navigate.

Grading and Leveling

If your driveway or property roads are mostly gravel, you’ll want to make sure they’re properly leveled and graded to prevent washouts and rough travel conditions. If you already have a 1 through 4 Series John Deere compact tractor, then a box blade is your new best friend for grading roads. A box blade uses a three-sided metal box mounted to your tractor’s three-point hitch. Teeth, or shanks, on the front of the box and a cutting edge on the back of the box work together to shape and level uneven ground. The front shanks break up hard clumps or high spots, while the rear blade smooths out the rough edges. It’s a simple but effective tool for grading and leveling driveways and roads.

Filling Potholes and Low Spots

If potholes are your worst enemy, you’ll need to fill them in with material to ensure your vehicles don’t hit a rough dip in the road and pop a tire. Potholes can be filled with a variety of materials, from dirt and gravel to asphalt and cement. The material you use really depends on how much you want to spend and how long you want the repair to last. Regardless of which material you choose, you need a way to transport your materials around your property. That’s where a front-end loader attachment comes into play. With a front-end loader on your CUT, you can lift and carry heavy soil or gravel, or bags of cement. It can do the work of a dozen workers without sacrificing your back in the process!

Managing Drainage and Erosion Prevention

Proper drainage is another important preventative task to maintain if you want to make sure your roads last. When heavy rains come through and dump several inches of rain on your roads, it can wash them away quickly if you don’t have the right drainage. Culverts are a huge preventative measure to keep rain from washing out roads. Make sure you install culverts at low points so water can drain out and away from your roads. Simple drainage ditches along the sides of roads also help to prevent erosion. If you’re looking to dig ditches yourself, then you’ll need the proper machines. A small backhoe attachment works well for your compact tractor, or for larger jobs, a compact excavator will do the trick.
