If you’ve ever wrestled a heavy roll of net wrap up into a baler by hand, you know exactly why the new John Deere 1 Series round balers are turning heads. Michael Sharpe from Tennessee Tractor recently walked through the brand-new 561M Heavy Duty model, which is the first to hit our lot, and the upgrades over the previous 560 series are worth a closer look.
Here’s what stood out, and why hay producers across West Tennessee should be paying attention to the 561M.
According to Michael, this one’s been a long time coming. Net wrap rolls keep getting longer and heavier, and lifting them into position has always been a chore, especially toward the end of a long day. The 1 Series fixes that with a built-in winch system. Just set the prop rod, grab the tethered control, and winch the roll right up into place. No more straining your back or calling for a second set of hands. It’s one of those features that sounds simple, but once you’ve used it, you won’t want to go without it.
Knowing your crop’s moisture content while you’re baling, and not after, makes a real difference. The 1 Series includes a built-in moisture sensor that reads conditions as you harvest, so you can make decisions on the fly. If things are getting too wet, you’ll know before it becomes a problem instead of finding out when the hay’s already in the barn.
For operations that sell hay by the ton or need to track yields closely, the available weight scale option is much appreciated. It weighs each individual bale as it’s made and documents the weight automatically. No more guessing how many tons you’ve put up; with the 561M, you’ll have real numbers to work with, field by field.
The Heavy Duty option on the 561M adds heavier chains on rollers 9 and 11. These are the two rollers that take the most punishment, especially when you’re baling heavy crops like alfalfa or hay that’s been rained on. If you’re putting serious hours on your baler every season, this kind of durability matters. The Mega Wide Pickup option also deserves a mention. At seven feet wide, it grabs more of the windrow on every pass, so you’re not leaving hay on the ground.
Daily greasing is one of those jobs nobody loves, but it’s got to get done. The 1 Series consolidates your grease fittings into a single bank and adds indicators so you know exactly which fitting you’re greasing. It’s a small thing that saves time every single day and makes it a lot harder to miss a fitting, which means fewer headaches down the road.
The Bale Trak Pro is where this baler really steps into the future. It’s an ISO-compatible display that works with John Deere Gen 4 monitors or any ISO-compatible screen, and it puts a lot of useful information right at your fingertips. You can set your desired bale size, track bale count per field, monitor average moisture, and, with the weight scales, keep a running total of tonnage and tons per hour.
One standout feature is the Max button. If you’re at the end of a field with a little windrow left, just hit Max to finish it off into your last bale without having to change your size settings back and forth. It’s a small convenience that adds up over a long day of baling.
Whether you’re running a large hay operation or putting up bales on your own property, the John Deere 1 Series round balers bring real, practical improvements that save you time and effort in the field. The 561M Heavy Duty is available now at Tennessee Tractor.
